Phone number verification and SMS opt-in

SimplyTalk sends exactly one kind of text message: a one-time verification code, and only when the person has just asked for it inside the app. This page documents that flow for carriers and for our users.

How a person opts in

There is no list to join and no way to be enrolled by someone else. The only path is the person entering their own number, on their own device, in the SimplyTalk app.

  1. The user opens SimplyTalk and reaches the screen shown below.
  2. The screen states plainly that a one-time code will be sent by SMS to confirm the number belongs to them, and that standard message and data rates may apply.
  3. The user types their own phone number and taps Send code. That tap is the opt-in.
  4. One SMS is sent, containing only the code.
  5. The user types the code back into the app to finish.
Confirm your phone number
We will text you a 6-digit code to confirm this number is yours. It lets the people you already know find you on SimplyTalk. Message and data rates may apply.

The block above quotes the consent wording of the in-app screen word for word, from PhoneIdentityView.swift, and names its two controls. It is a transcription, not a screenshot. STOP, HELP and START are answered by the SMS service, described below; they do not appear on this screen.
